Abergavenny sits in a bowl of hills where the Usk and the Gavenny meet, with the Sugar Loaf, the Blorenge and the Skirrid on three sides. It's the busiest market town in the county and the main way in to the eastern side of Bannau Brycheiniog, so it draws walkers, cyclists and food lovers in equal measure.
The town centre is compact and mostly independent: butchers, delis, cafés, pubs and specialist shops, with the market hall at its heart. Around that you'll find a good spread of trades, professional firms and health practices serving the villages for miles around.

Questions about Abergavenny
What is Abergavenny known for?
Food, mostly. The Abergavenny Food Festival takes over the town every September, and the market hall and independent shops keep that reputation going the rest of the year. It's also known as the gateway to the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) and for the three hills that ring the town.
How do I get to Abergavenny?
Abergavenny has a railway station on the line between Newport and Hereford, a short walk from the town centre. By road it sits on the A40, A465 and A4042, about 20 minutes from Monmouth and half an hour from Newport.
What is the Welsh name for Abergavenny?
Y Fenni. You'll see both names on signs around the town.
Is Abergavenny a good base for walking?
Yes. The Sugar Loaf, the Blorenge and the Skirrid can all be walked from town or a short drive away, and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal runs along the valley just south of the centre.
